MEMORY features 14 unique poetry films, each exploring the theme in a different way. MEMORY does more than metaphorically scrawl on the walls of the system, it breaks through them with powerful creative expressions of who we are!

Blood Sonnet - Jayne Fenton Keane
Jayne Fenton Keane describes her 3 minute exploration into the body poetic as a "memory tentatively offered to the world”. The video features a heart pumping electro soundtrack and stirring spoken word performance revealing the "layers" of Memory.

Downriver - Stefanie Petrik

Memory, desire and possibility, are all explored in a stunningly beautiful setting. Petrik is experienced in the art of poetry filmmaking and brings an acute sense of visual detail to her work. Her quiet narrative is well complemented by the Daevid Allen soundscape.

My Home – Sharmy Pandey
(produced by Subhankar Das)
Sharmy Pandey describes this film as a “personal passion play about home, about that moment when your mind removes the barrier between past and present and they start intermingling with each other.”

The Search – Deb Matthews-Zott
A moving piece about the memory of a disturbing event, the disappearance of a child and the subsequent search. Matthews-Zott’s narrative is well complemented by a thoughtful collection of still and moving images and a haunting soundtrack.

Gerald and Guilio – Chris Mansell

The only wordless video poem featured on Memory, Chris Mansell links memory to imagination, imagination to matter, challenging us to forge those synaptic connections for ourselves.

Childhood in Richmond – Komninos Zervos
A video poem exploring the good and the not-so-good memories of childhood. This piece combines still images, animation and a characteristically brilliant delivery of an excellent poem by one of Australia’s best performance poets.

Sorrow Follows Terror – Alana Hicks
Alana Hicks delivers a moving piece reflecting on childhood and troubled times.

Backwards – Deb Matthews-Zott
In her second piece created for Memory, Matthews-Zott presents a contemplative offering combining stunning photographic images with reflective music and spoken word.

On The Dot – Magdalena Ball

An explosion of light, colour, word and sound, much like the composite nature of our memories.

Tanks – Komninos Zervos
A poem that juxtaposes the personal history of the author in Australia with broader historical events occurring in Greece at the same time. The dissolving and fading of images reminds us of the true nature of memory and the limitations of recall.

Always be Running – Sara Moss and Scart
A mixture of culture jamming, narrative poem, activist footage, chanting and heavy music. The piece was written by Moss for a friend involved in the “Woomera Convergence”, a now famous protest against the detention of refugees in Australia.

To Live – Sara Moss, Scart and Halil Ibrahim Karatas
This 17 minute biopic features the life story, art and poetry of Turkish poet and activist Halil Ibrahim Karatas who was imprisoned and tortured for four years for leftist political activities. Part poetry film and part harrowing documentary.

The Unfolding Night – Sara Moss and Scart
One night in the winter of 2010, Sara Moss and Scart went out into the night with their home video camera to collect footage for a poetry film. This experimental piece blurs the boundaries of genre between poetry film and music clip.

We hope you are inspired, challenged and entertained by the films included in Memory: Video Poetry DVD. Proceeds from sales of the DVD will cover production costs and assist us with further projects.
